Who We Are
In November of 2000, God placed on the heart of Keena Trapps, founder of The Widows Pantry, to reach out to church members and friends she knew were struggling to provide for their families. The Widows Pantry became a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization on June 30, 2016.
Keena was obedient to what God placed on her heart and through that obedience, He showed Keena how He wanted to use her. He gave her the name, The Widows Pantry inspired by a sermon she had heard taken from 1 Kings 17:7-16. This scripture reminded her of how she struggled during a season in her life and how God didn’t allow her or her son to go to bed hungry, just as the widow in the story.
The years to follow would prove God’s vision to Keena was purposed and The Widow’s Pantry, Inc., a faith-based organization, incorporated since November 2013 would begin the mission of “Serving God’s People With Love and Dignity”.
Our Mission
The Widow’s Pantry is 100% volunteer driven and is funded completely by donations. As a corporation, it has operated with the theme to “Serve God’s People With Love and Dignity” throughout the Washington DC metropolitan area for the past 15 years. The organization goes to those places in the DMV where many who are disadvantaged dwell. Meals, prayer and other resources to help assist are provided monthly. In the past years, The Widow’s Pantry has successfully assisted thousands of displaced persons and families who are struggling residing in our shelters.
Our Values
With integrity at the forefront and God’s direction to serve with love as stated in Matthew 25:40, “Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me”, The Widow’s Pantry has conformed to the vision given to Keena Trapps. It operates under her leadership as its Executive Director as well as a Board of Director, who serve in an advisory capacity to the organization. We believe that those we serve, no matter their circumstance, deserve the love and care we provide.
What We Do
The organization goes to local shelters once a month including Christmas Day to provide a meal, coats, toiletries and spiritual encouragement to those in need in the community. We may have as many as 100 volunteers to come out on holidays to serve a meal and other provisions to those in need.
Each month the organization goes to local shelters to provide a meal, spiritual encouragement, and toiletries. Every Christmas we look forward to providing the residents at local shelters with a new coat, hat, gloves, a meal, and spiritual encouragement. We have as many as 100 volunteers coming out on holidays to serve a meal and other provisions to those in need.
On April 19, 2022, The Widows Pantry began offering learning opportunities through our Life Skills program. This is a safe place where those who seek to grow in educational areas can benefit from free classes for certification in Microsoft Office Suites, Project Management, Customer Service, Leadership Training, Writing Skills and other classes that will help transform one’s life.
We cannot continue this tremendous work without you!
